Day Trip #1: Zone Atelier Armorique + La Gacilly photography festival (Green badge)

Professionnal visit

This visit will present the genesis of the long-term socio-ecological research site Zone Atelier Armorique Sud integrated in the eLTER network where a set of projects based on agriculture transition have been carried on. First stop will be linked to a long-term design manipulating organic farming and semi-natural habitats cover at the landscape level. Our current research analyzes the effect of organic farming and hedgerows at field and landscape scales on the agrosystem multifunctionality. Multifunctional assessment integrates aboveground and belowground biodiversity, crop production, regulation functions and socio-economic indicators on wheat crops. Other research topics are linked with socio-ecological approaches with farmers to detect and understand the obstacles and levers to the agro-ecological transition. Particular focus is made on weed species regulation in crops. A second stop will be done at the Yves Rocher company to present some collaborative works that are done on plant-microbe interactions and how auxillary plants may promote microbiota diversity of cornflower and result in changes in the quality of cosmetics. The "Yves Rocher" herbarium opens its doors exclusively to you. This magical place is brimming with plants that are harvested and dried to be used in the composition of the brand's creams and other cosmetics.

Sightseeing

Founded in 2004, the international La Gacilly Photo Festival invites you on an immersive photographic experience as you stroll around 20 or so open-air galleries presenting the very best in contemporary photographic creation that questions our relationship with our world and our natural environment. Between science and artistic creation, the well-being of humanity is important here. Come and discover the beauty of La Gacilly traditional Breton village where charming stone buildings house arts and crafts workshops. Listen to the sounds of the river Aff, a walk in the heart of nature awaits you.

Day Trip #2: EFELE/ValEnSol + The walled city of Saint-Malo (Grey badge)

Professionnal visit

Discover two experiments on soil quality during this visit, the EFELE system and the ValEnSol system. Since 2012, the EFELE system has been studying the impact of different types of livestock manure and tillage practices on water, air and soil quality. After 10 years of a maize-wheat-intermediate crop rotation typical of Brittany, from 2022 the crop sequence shifted to a longer, pesticide-free rotation. This system is part of a national network of long-term observatories studying organic waste products. The ValEnSol system is also dedicated to studying the behaviour of organic products in soils and their impacts on soil, water and air quality on a smaller scale. It consists of 24 instrumented 1 m³ (600 litre) containers. The aim is to study the processes involved in the decomposition of organic products in soils and the consequences for soil, water and air quality, taking into account soil-plant interactions.

Sightseeing

City of Buccaneers, Capital of the Sea, Jewel of the Côte d'Émeraude, Start of the Route du Rhum transatlantic race... however you describe it, Saint-Malo has always been a place of adventure and dreams...

Day Trip #3: UE La Motte + Brocéliande forest, the birthplace of legends (Yellow badge)

Professionnal visit

The UE La Motte is an experimental unit that aims to support the research carried out by three Joint Unit Research, UMR IGEPP, UMR BAGAP, and UMR SAS. The tasks of the UE La Motte include: setting up crop management systems for agronomic experiments, carrying out genetic and varietal innovation analyses, environmental instrumentation and phenotyping of plant cover. The unit provides research teams with the resources they need to conduct effective experiments, including qualified staff, traceable plot histories, and state-of-the-art equipment. The UE La Motte is part of the GEVES network for registering new varieties.

Sightseeing

Classified as a natural site of interest for its ecology, flora and fauna, the Brocéliande forest is an exceptional site for the conservation of plant and animal species. Many wonders are associated with this famous forest. Its fame extends far beyond the borders of Armorica and has inspired many great writers of chivalric romance. Many of Arthur's exploits took place in the realm of the mythical Brocéliande forest!

Day Trip #4: Vegetable production area + Mont Saint-Michel (Orange badge)

Professional visit

The Mont Saint Michel polder region is a traditional field vegetable production area. The silty soils and the presence of a shallow water table are highly favorable to these high value-added crops. Cropping systems include vegetables (carrot, lettuce, leek, celery, potato, turnip, etc.) as well as wheat and maize. We offer a presentation of the regional vegetable industry and a visit to a farm with an opportunity to talk to the producer in the field.

Sightseeing

The day will end with a visit to one of the very first monuments to be listed as a UNESCo World Heritage Site: Mont Saint-Michel. A guided tour will enable you to discover the history and architectural heritage of the abbey of Mont Saint-Michel and its village, with a view over the whole bay.

Day Trip #5: Leisure time + Tour of the city of Rennes (White badge)

After a free time in the morning (or participation in the Root2Res side-event), join us to visit Rennes! An incredibly rich heritage awaits you in this city. Take a stroll down a narrow cobbled street in the heart of the historic centre and you'll be surprised and amazed. Discover the Gallo-Roman remains, the colourful half-timbered houses, the buildings in granite and tuffeau, the Odorico mosaics... The walk will be a monumental journey through the ages!
